Giovanni Boldini was born in Ferrara, Italy, in 1845. His friends called him Zanin, but his paintings would earn him another nickname, “master of swish.”1In the early 1870s, Boldini traveled to London, England, and began painting the nobility and illustrious members of English society. His career as one of the most sought-after society portraitists of the Gilded Age would bring him into the homes and lives of the wealthiest and most extravagant members of international society.1
