VELÁZQUEZ'S Philip IV at Fraga is one of the most celebrated images of the Spanish monarch and a key work in the evolution of the artist's portrait style. Together with his contemporaries, Rubens and Van Dyck, Velázquez was one of the most important court painters of the 17th century. However, unlike his Flemish contemporaries, who served at various courts throughout Europe, Velázquez remained at the service of only 1 monarch, Philip IV of Spain. Over the course of his long career at court, Velázquez eventually rose to the status of courtier and enjoyed a close relationship with the Hapsburg king.Article
