James Tait Goodrich and David A. Staffenberg have updated their textbook, Plastic Techniques in Neurosurgery. The book was first published in 1991, and the current edition provides updated information while continuing to describe the complex and successful interface between reconstructive and neurological surgeons. In the preface, the authors refer to their second edition as palimpsestic, alluding to a papyrus manuscript that has been written on previously with the earlier writing incompletely erased and still legible. Indeed, many of the previous edition's finer points continue to shine in the pages of this edition. The authors also include in the preface a quotation from Leonardo da Vinci: “O! Author, with what words will you describe with such perfection the whole configuration such as the sketch does here?” Although this expression may seem somewhat dramatic, the point is taken to heart as the authors' thoughts emerge not only in their writing but through beautiful, full-color drawings and photographs.
