David M. Lieberman, MD, and colleagues analyze the effect of corticosteroid administration on facial motor nucleus functional recovery and cell survival after crush injury. They induced crush injury on murine facial nerves and performed observation and tissue examination to determine neuron and glial survival. Their study helps in understanding whether low-dose steroid treatment can enhance recovery after physical injury to peripheral nerves.
J. Jared Christophel, MD, and Peter A. Hilger, MD, present their study on the long-term stability of osseocartilaginous dorsal onlay rib grafts used for augmentation rhinoplasty. This is a single-unit autologous implant composed of both bone and cartilage. They analyzed 39 patients who underwent this type of onlay graft for aspects of the graft that may affect its use as long-term scaffold. The article discusses their technique and its uses and the study's patient outcome.
Matt A. Wilson, MD, and Steven R. Mobley, MD, present a study on extracorporeal septoplasty. They discuss their preferred technique and method of fixation in detail and compare it with previously described methods. They evaluate 26 patients who underwent this type of septoplasty for complications and compare their findings with those of previous reports.
Jason M. Guillot, MD, and colleagues studied sensation in patients who had undergone various brow-lift approaches. They used mechanoreceptive and thermoreceptive devices as well as subjective questions to determine which type of brow-lift, open vs endoscopic, was associated with more sensory loss over a period of up to 26 weeks after surgery. The study also determines whether objective sensory measurements correlate with a subjective feeling of sensory loss.
