I was delighted to read the letter by Hawke and Burns1 in which they reported the confirmation and quantification by Hallegraeff et al2 of our earlier observation recommending prophylactic calf stretching as a technique for preventing nocturnal cramps.3 In their study, Hallegraeff et al2 used a combination of 3 stretching techniques, including the one that we had described. Readers may be interested to know that we currently use a technique modified from that reported in our original publication, now incorporating changes that became indicated after our greater appreciation for the diminished balance and impaired flexibility of our older patients.
