Hyperglycemia-Induced Hyponatremia: Is It Time to Correct the Correction Factor?

Arch Intern Med. 1999;159(22):2745. doi:

In reply

Our article1 used the theoretical correction factor described by Katz2 for estimating the effect of hyperglycemia on the serum sodium concentration. Based on a recent publication by Hillier et al,3 Dr Kashyap's letter suggests that a larger correction factor might have been more appropriate. Inasmuch as our article was published 2 months before that of Hillier et al,3 we could not have considered using their empirical correction factors.
