In the July 14, 1997, issue of the ARCHIVES, Joshi and Miller,1 in their review article on doxycycline, state, "Doxycycline, like any tetracycline, may cause photosensitivity reactions." The Table on page 1422 reports an equal rate of photosensitivity for tetracycline and doxycycline. However, Cunha,2,3 in 2 recent articles about doxycycline, states that "doxycycline does not cause the photosensitizing reaction that may occur with conventional tetracycline"2 and that "photosensitizing reactions, while common with tetracyclines, are rare with doxycycline."3 I would appreciate an explanation of this discrepancy.
