Does Alcohol Prevent Mortality or Does It Just Prevent Coronary Heart Disease?

I am writing in response to the article by Mukamal et al.1 As a middle-aged health professional myself, who has a glass of wine or even 2 many nights of the week, I was heartened by their report from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study that alcohol consumption might be an adjunct to other heart-healthy behaviors (body mass index [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared] <25, physical activity, not smoking, and a healthy diet) in preventing myocardial infarction. But this report did not provide any data on overall mortality.
