Culture Clash

Arch Intern Med. 1999;159(12):1373-1374. doi:

In their letter, Drs Garcia and Murray-Garcia illustrate the type of cultural arrogance that ignorance sustains. Clearly needed in medicine is greater cultural education and sensitivity training. Medical leadership must recognize and articulate the value of culture in health and illness. Medical educators must impress on students the centrality of individual patient's values (cultural or otherwise), and develop standards for assessing patient-relevant medical care.
