This volume includes chapters on the basic physiology of body fluids and electrolytes; on the varieties of water and salt depletion, and on electrolyte and fluid disturbances in heart failure, postoperative states, renal disease, diabetes mellitus, adrenal cortical insufficiency, and various types of trauma. There are special chapters on potassium metabolism and on fluid balances in pediatrics and geriatrics. The text is profusely illustrated with "Gamblegrams."
Considering the scope of the discussion, the author has, in general, satisfied his aim "to provide a practical, usable guide to the recognition and treatment of the various fluid and electrolyte abnormalities that may arise in medical and surgical patients." It is to be all the more regretted, therefore, that the format is so unpalatable, with pages of long unbroken lines of monotonous type.
