Some readers will take issue with some of the author's selections of milestones. However, all readers will find a concentrated diet of surgical history, the men and works which have made it, between the covers of this volume. Biographical sketches, including photographs, provide informative boileddown summaries of the professional lives of deceased surgical giants like Billroth, Kocher, Crile, Halsted, and Bassini as well as contemporaries, such as Randall, Fleming, Wagensteen, Gross, and Gibbon, whose productive professional lives are as yet unfinished. The original papers as they appeared, with pertinent illustrations, bibliographies, and references, are the milestones. By deleting tables, case histories, and unnecessary illustrations, the authors have made the papers more succinct, readable, and useful, without sacrificing either accuracy or pertinent detail. The format and binding are satisfactory. This book is a must for those interested in medical history; it will be of interest and a valuable reference for medical
