Abstract

This monograph details the experience of the authors in the management of patients with hiatal hernia and reflux esophagitis with gastropexy and fundoplication proce- dure during the last thirteen years at the surgical clinic in Basel.

They classify hiatal hernia into eight types, which classification includes the congenital form of hiatal hernia. The indications for surgical intervention are discussed. The operative technique is illustrated by numerous schematic diagrams and half-tone drawings. It is of minor interest that there is apparently no German equivalent for the term "upside down stomach."

The middle third of the book reports on the clinical and roentgen findings (pre- and postoperative) of a selected number of their total group of one hundred twenty patients. The last chapter consists of a summary of their findings. Clinical and roentgen evidenc of healing following gastropexy is reported in 90% of patients with paraesophageal hiatal hernia and 82% of patients
