This comprehensive volume comprises some seventeen treatises on biologic subjects. Actual research work in widely divergent fields is ably presented by well-known authorities. However, the various topics are not connected with each other. Detailed, often original research contributions are assembled. It is an at-random selection of heterogenic studies intended to familiarize medical research workers with progress in other fields.

The volume starts with a paper about pain, protective system, and morphine-like compounds by O. Schaumann, followed by R. Granit's study on gamma neuron activities descending from the reticular substance. H. Ch. Lüttgau presents the physiology of myelinated nerve fibers, and Crosby, E. C., Humphrey, T., and Showers, M. D. deal with problems of the supplementary motor cortices. The structural pathology of the vegetative nervous centers by E. Hagen concludes research aspects in the neurologic sciences.
