Ths volume was originally published as a supplement to Circulation in May, 1960, and consists of the papers presented at the symposium of the American Heart Association in New York on December 11-12, 1959. It contains twenty-two papers on the most recent work on the fundamentals of salt and water metabolism, ranging from the intra- and extrarenal regulation of salt and water, to ion transport and exchange mechanisms, to the structure of solutions. The papers are well written, concise, and to the point, and are interspaced with detailed comments and discussion between many leaders of the field.
The work is dedicated to rather basic research and has little effective clinical applicability, but is of great interest and value to any physician intent on keeping up with the basic sciences. It is of especially great value to those doing original work in the fields of metabolism.
