The simultaneous meeting of the American College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterological Association in 1960 brought together a large number of eminent gastroenterologists, and these men presented a course and were subsequently called upon to provide their material in manuscript form for this volume. Seventy-four authors produced 57 chapters of highly varying quality. It is clear from the inception that there was no uniform understanding of what the book should include, for a variation from the short opinionated lecture to the highly useful, well-illustrated, and well-documented monograph is seen in the book. The first portion is largely on the esophagus and contains several practical guides to hydrostatic dilatation of the esophagus, photography of the stomach and esophagus, and cytology of the upper gastrointestinal tract. A discussion of benign esophageal dysfunction and disease by J. H. Moersch is well done and a strength to the book.
