This short monograph, the first in a series of pathological monographs, was produced as a comprehensive review and guide to a large literature. It condenses pertinent data from original sources and uses authoritative commentaries on current ideas and knowledge in the field. The authors are both experienced pathologists, and Sir Roy has contributed heavily to the literature of biliary obstruction for at least 3 decades.

The first third of the book reviews the morphology and repair of the biliary tree and the physiology of bile flow and adaption to its impaired flow. This review is refreshing, for it introduces many European studies that are lacking in many American reviews. The arguments are soundly supported and briefly presented. The regenerative ability of the bile ducts is quite astounding. The remainder of the book is devoted to the pathology and pathological physiology of various forms of biliary cirrhosis.
