This is the second volume of the annual Progress in Medical Genetics which began so auspiciously last year with a most remarkable collection of essays on various aspects of human genetics. This issue has been eagerly awaited and fulfills the greatest expectations for this series. Dr. Steinberg, who shares the editorship with Dr. Bearn this year, must be congratulated for again obtaining the cooperation of an outstanding group of contributors who maintained, indeed exceeded in some aspects, the level of excellence established last year.

The first six chapters cover in 210 pages a beautifully concise and well-rounded review of the serum proteins, the aminoacidurias, antibody synthesis, and immunogenetic aspects of the collagen vascular diseases. The only thing missing was "Smithies on the haptoglobulins." Dr. Steinberg himself is the author of the first chapter dealing with the genetically determined human y-globulin types (the Gm and Inv groups); he acquits himself in
