This is the third edition of Dr. Statland's book, which was originally published in 1954 and issued in second edition in 1957. In this edition, Dr. Statland has four collaborators who have helped to extend the scope and usefulness of the volume. Dr. P. R. Schloerb has written the chapter on surgery, trauma, and blood loss as well as the section on management of the surgical patient. Dr. S. Hellerstein has written on pediatric fluid balance, and Dr. M. C. Creditor has discussed problems of renal disease, diuretics, and acid-base balance. The section on electrocardiographic change, liver and heart disease has been redone by Dr. M. Statland. The material in the various chapters is not specifically referenced, but at the end of the book there is a bibliography with selected reading for each chapter.
