Abstract

This new edition of a general textbook is a comprehensive discussion of the background, physiology, radiology, diagnosis, and treatment of nearly all gastrointestinal disorders. It is written by a thorough clinician who has studied both the literature and his own intense and extensive experience. From this he has distilled into book form that which he believes to be important. He is a strong and refreshing writer. Little of the mythology of clinical gastroenterology is perpetuated here. Erudite and controversial issues in the experimental literature are usually summarized concisely or left at "the experts disagree."

The strength of the book is the coherence and continuity of a single author. There are few contradictions or gaps, and all of the common and many of the uncommon diagnostic problems of gastroenterology have been personally observed and studied by Dr. Palmer.
