This series of talks was given as part of a course of the Departments of Medicine and Pharmacology of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. Designed for medical students, it has the virtue of elucidating basic principles and theories and presenting them in clinical and practical terms. The educa- tional approach of the classroom is evident and effective.

The subjects covered include pulmonary edema, congestive heart failure, acute myocardiac infarction, hypertension, acute paroxysmal tachycardiac hemorrhagic shock, status asthmaticus, acute anuria, hyperthyroidism, convulsions, status epilepticus, severe pain, emotional depression, the terminally ill patient, and the upper gastrointestinal tract.

The physiology of each subject is reviewed and the steps in treatment are outlined. Insight into the natural cause of the disorders is given in the introductory remarks. The evaluation of the efficacy of the drugs and application to the individual problems is then presented and a discussion by a panel
