This is a delightful book. Although it is unimpeachably scientific, its humor, informal style, and sturdy, vigorous prose come as a fresh breeze to the mind of the jaded reader. Thus, a discussion of "prediabetes" is opened with the following: "Uneuphonious Alliteration: Damsels destined to develop diabetes divulge direful destiny with fruitful fecundity frequently forming fat flabby feeble fetuses." One chapter is entitled simply "A Plain Man's Guide to Insulin."

The book is faithful to its subtitle. It really is "selected topics..." and by intention not a complete text. Nevertheless, it covers the most important aspects of diabetes and in these it is strictly up to date. Four of its 23 chapters are devoted to pregnancy and diabetes, a subject which some may regard as unduly emphasized but in which the author has been especially interested and to which he has made many original contributions.
