Patient education is a difficult problem which physicians face in explaining disease processes, treatment, and prevention to those afflicted with a serious chronic disease. Anxiety states, at times induced by careless words or inadequate instruction, are certainly encountered commonly enough in patients with coronary heart disease to cause physicians treating such patients to desire that their education be more thorough and more comprehensive than it now is. Intelligent patients will leave no stones unturned in their efforts to find out about their disease process. At times, they acquire misinformation which further enhances their natural anxiety about their condition and, at other times, may actually lead them into channels of poor treatment or even mistreatment by quacks. Myron Prinzmetal has done an excellent job in explaining the problem of coronary heart disease to patients with this disease.
