As stated in the preface, this book is a transcript of the Second Colloquium on Diagnostic Radiologic Instrumentation held at the University of Chicago in April of 1964. This book, which consists of a series of papers followed by the impromptu remarks made from the floor after presentation, and which lacks any explanatory or background commentaries, has the least inviting format conceivable for the reader. There are repetitious introductions and conclusions, inconsistencies of mathematical symbols, and maddening omissions of information essential to understanding the subject at hand. After all, papers are intended for those up-to-date in the field, and the authors—trying to squeeze as much as possible in the allotted time—assume a great deal of background on the part of the reader. Moreover, at any scientific meeting there are always a few speakers striving to impress rather than inform.
