This book contains a facsimile of the 1950 edition of Gastroscopy plus an introductory discussion of recent revolutionary developments in gastroscopic instrumentation. Thirty color plates of gastroscopic photographs have been appended to supplement the original drawings. The format is unique in that all new material has been added in the introduction. The location of this summary of recent developments in gastroscopy ahead of older material does assist the reader in gaining the proper perspective before launching into the reprinted 1950 edition. The bibliography has been up-dated by the addition of 191 selected references that have appeared since 1950.
In the introduction the author briefly reviews the latest developments in conventional as well as fiber optic gastroscopes, but does not provide details of the newer techniques. He makes the point that many present day physicians who use the fiber optic gastroscope have not become skilled through training prior to starting this
