The dust cover heralds this volume as "the first book on virological topics in the Modern Trend Series, and as such is a major record of recent achievements in this vital field". The preface by the editors properly described the reviews contained in the book as "digests of recent work on topics in medical virology selected because of their intrinsic importance and because of considerable advances in these fields in recent years".

It is indeed a vital and prolific field, and the records of accomplishments are accumulating at a logarithmic rate. This year alone has seen the introduction of two major journals in the English language, namely, the Journal of Virology, sponsored by the American Society of Microbiology and the Journal of General Virology, sponsored by the Society of General Microbiology.
