This book, a new edition of a volume first published nine years ago, contains much useful information. It is up to date and many recent references, mostly from the German and American literature, are quoted. There are certain shortcomings which might be corrected in a future edition. Separation of the descriptions of manifestations of renal disease from the discussion of the disease entity appears artificial at times and leads to duplication. For example, one section is devoted to the pathogenesis of the nephrotic syndrome; one hundred pages later diseases are listed and discussed which may be associated with this syndrome. There is also considerable fluctuation in the space allotted to individual subjects. Some trimming here and there would eliminate less relevant information carried over from previous editions and facilitate a better balance between various topics.

Finally, in an attempt to be comprehensive, there is at times an almost encyclopedic presentation
