This concise review of progress in cancer research is a timely book written by one of the great names in the field. It is anecdotal—giving no references, mentioning no investigators—but the story is told by one who has been part of this exciting scientific endeavor.

Several functions are served by this small volume. The major aim is to inform the physician caring for patients with neoplastic disease regarding the progress which has been made in the area. The book, however, is written to be understood by nonmedical readers who might be interested to learn about the gap existing between what is known now and what remains to be explored before the cancer problem can be solved. In this regard, it might be useful to send copies to members of Congress to help them sympathize with the position that the cancer problem requires much more basic research before we can hope
