Abstract

"The injured person's grip on life must be secured." Such felicitous writing characterizes this excellent new volume from England on the management of trauma. The author shows a delightful propensity for simple, direct writing (for him the abdomen is the belly) that makes his book enjoyable and informative.

The experience skew of the English general surgeon dealing with trauma is evident; more than one half of the book is pure orthopedic surgery presented in considerable detail. Chapters concerned with more urgent aspects of trauma are well done, appropriately emphasizing new concepts, with the glaring exception of vascular injuries and their repair which are covered in a scant and superficial six pages. The book will be a valuable primer for the house officer or practicing physician who works in the accident room.
