This book is an attempt by the late Dr. Maurice Costello and Dr. Richard Gibbs to discuss all conditions which may affect the palms and soles. The text which the authors have produced is confusing but interesting. It should be a "splitter's" delight but may grate on the "lumper's" sense of unity. The classification was made mainly according to the precise site and frequency of involvement. As a result, we find chapters called "Conditions Commonly Found Only on the Soles...," "Conditions Commonly Found on Both Palms and Soles...," and "Conditions Commonly Found Either on Palms or Soles...." Chapter 6 climaxes this mounting confusion with "Conditions Affecting the Palms and/or Soles Frequently, or Fortuitously, or as Part of a More Generalized Dermatosis." Not only is this classification bad because it leads to clumsy chapter titles, but we find, unfortunately, that diseases of single etiology are bisected or trisected to be included
