Leo Hollister has written a comprehensive review of the current status of psychomimetic drugs starting with a fascinating chapter on historical perspectives. This monograph surveys the entire field including discussions of psychologic effects, neurophysiologic, physiologic, biochemical, and metabolic effects of these drugs. The role of chemical psychoses as a form of therapy and a concluding chapter on the role of drugs in Western culture rounds out the discussion. It is a frank scientific document with a clear denunciation of the antiintellectual threat posed by these drugs. The bibliography is current (through 1966).
