This annual review of basic neurologic science, neurology, psychiatry and neurosurgery is a familiar, perennially-valuable friend. Its scope is broad as it attempts to provide a comprehensive but critical review of the pertinent literature. With 65 contributors, duplication is inescapable and writing style varies considerably. Some chapters are quite digestible and enjoyable: others serve only to guide the reader to the reference via a key word or one sentence abstract. This is a forgivable and understandable byproduct of attempting to review over 5,220 papers in a single volume. The chief value of this work is as an initial reference source to the current literature. Index and general organization are well suited to the rapid location of specific information; thus, it fulfills its purpose admirably, as ever.
