The fourth edition constitutes an extensive revision of the classic book first published by Warren in 1930 and revised in 1938 and 1952.
New dimensions have been added to this revision by including six chapters: a historical review (10 pages); changes involving the whole pancreas (14 pages); intermediary metabolites in diabetes (15 pages); diabetic angiography (32 pages); spontaneous diabetes in animals (6 pages); and pathologic aspects of antidiabetic drugs other than insulin (6 pages). Some of these are new; others represent extensive revision with reemphasis of subheadings in chapters of previous editions. Old chapters have been brought up to date and, in many instances, rewritten in a clearer, more concise, and better organized manner. The emphasis has been properly readjusted with changing times. Thus while the chapter on heart remains essentially the same number of pages (albeit with coverage of current data) the chapter on kidney has been expanded from
