This is the fourth edition of a small volume dealing with a field of medicine and infectious diseases which has made significant strides since 1961. Such a book should be evaluated with these recent advances in mind. I feel that a number of the chapters are not as current as they might be. The book is well written, however, and has the clarity of style characteristic of the English writers. By virtue of its small size there is a good chance that it will be read. Comparison with another volume of similar name and price shows that this edition is deficient in two respects. Discussion of the molecular basis of viral disease is too brief, and the references lack complete titles which I find helpful in the selection of articles for further study.
I would not discard this book by any means. It serves a useful purpose as a guide
