Abstract

This monograph is actually a reprinting of the same book first published in 1936. A very limited attempt is made to bridge the gap between 1936 and 1967 by T. Z. Csaky; unfortunately, his essentially two-page review is not adequate. As Csaky says, "for those interested in the recent knowledge and ideas in the field of intestinal absorption, a number of monographs and reviews have been published." I would agree with this. The various modern techniques such as human small bowel biopsy, use of isotope tracer substances, and electron microscopy were not available before the first publication.

For the physiologist, the rather lengthy review of literature and the theories proposed may have historical interest. A thoroughly revised edition would have been a great deal of work, but such an undertaking would have had much more value, especially if it were closely integrated with the author's original publication.
