This textbook is the German equivalent of Sodeman and Sodeman's Pathologic Physiology, published by W. B. Saunders Co. The fourth edition of the latter (1967) is one-quarter larger than the German volume, and its superiority is in part attributable to greater thoroughness. However, since this "Lehrbuch" is intended as a general text for students and practicing physicians, the limitations of space require stringent editing, but this fact does not entirely excuse gaps in breadth. The editor is a renowned hematologist, and the chapter on blood is outstanding. Its disproportionate length may be justified in that it contains the only mention of genetics (in relation to blood groups) and the only description of immune mechanisms.
Other contributors have also written lucidly. However, the few sentences about allergic mechanisms are sequestered in the chapter on the cardiovascular system. There is nothing on auto-immunity, nor pathophysiology of joints, nor responses to chemical toxins,
