It is astounding that a single author has successfully written a book on clinical and experimental immunology and immunopathology. Furthermore, Carl Steffen, of the University of Vienna Institute of Immunology, has included instructions on clinical testing and on procedures applicable to animal and in vitro research. All facets of theoretical and diagnostic immunology are discussed in the first 18 chapters; the last three deal with procedures. Information presented includes the old (Arthus phenomenon) and the new (latest developments in our knowledge of immunoglobulins, immunochemistry, immunofluorescence, and transplant immunology).

This superbly printed book abounds with helpful diagrams, sketches, formulae, photographs, tables, graphs, and other figures; it is extraordinarily comprehensive. It should be of great value to those who can read German well and also to those whose knowledge of German is modest. Since the latter consitute most American physicians and since the book is so valuable, it is worth explaining why
