Clinical pathologist Ravel offers this inexpensive, soft-cover response to the "laboratory test explosion." This is a remarkably comprehensive, current, and unusually clinically oriented text. The author does not shy away from clinical descriptions of disorders in his effort to enlighten readers about the appropriateness and meaning of laboratory data. He is concerned about lack of discrimination of clinicians manifested by imprecise and often perfunctory ordering of tests, and the sequelae in wasted effort, time, and money.

There is no pretense here at encyclopedic coverage or cook-book methodology. Ravel has created a sound volume that will complement existing books on clinical laboratory medicine. I predict great popularity among students and house officers, and many future editions.
