This book is made up of eight papers presented at the February 1966 First International Symposium on Amphetamine Abuse which was held "to attempt to initiate a dialogue between the many professions who are interested in amphetamine type-abuse." The disciplines represented include medicine, pharmacology, psychiatry, law, sociology, law enforcement, and education. The essays are authoritative, and each author is recognized as an expert in his field, but the material and the style of presentation are obviously controlled by the fact that the audience was very mixed; each topic is discussed in the light of its general interest, rather than from the narrow view of the specialist.
The essays are short: together with an introduction, a closing summary, three appendices, and an index, they make a book of 159 pages. It is far too small to represent a definitive or comprehensive work on this vast subject. Topics covered are those which
