In the introduction it is stated perhaps with undue modesty that the book is addressed to the general physician involved in the care of hematologic patients, not to hematologists. As one reads through this elegant volume, however, one realizes that it will prove to be of significant value to hematologists as well.
In 856 pages of rather small print, the authors have compiled, in a very readable form, most of the knowledge available regarding hematologic disease. The introductory chapter gives an excellent theoretical background for the various aspects of hematology, including a section on immunohematology which is usually missing from comparable textbooks. The illustrations are, for the most part, excellent, and the numerous tables and figures are clear and informative.
There is careful documentation and a handy reference system, listing the author and date of publication at the bottom of each page. In addition there is a 60-page bibliography
