Abstract

To the deluge of medical books flooding the American market are now added very handsomely wrought review collections which in principle are English translations of German periodicals. They reflect the excellence of German publishing techniques, particularly of the Springer Verlag. Frequently, American authors contribute to this international enterprise. This fact, however, aggravates the task of the expert who wants to keep up with the literature, the task of the neophyte to select his reading material, and the task of the average reader not especially interested in a given field.

This book comes disguised as a progress book, although it presents a curious combination of some advance information and some presentations found in classical student textbooks. It is dedicated to George T. Pack, one of the leaders in American surgery, who with his co-workers conceived the volume before his death. The main part of the book represents the experiences of the
