The stated purposes of this handbook are (1) to serve as a presentation of an approach to planning and evaluation of clinical investigations, and, (2) as a source of tables, formulae, and methods used most frequently in the analysis of data from such investigations. The book is written for "any practitioner of the clinical art" by two well-known experts in clinical investigations.

The 46 pages of text and the 46 pages of appendices make up a volume which is of little use to most clinicians. The practitioner who has not done clinical investigations will find the text much too full of examples and nearly devoid of firm guide posts. For instance, the general principles of design of clinical studies takes up less than one page and is too superficial to be of value. With this book as a guide, the inexperienced practitioner will not be able to evaluate a journal
