This monumental two-volume monograph on experimental cardiovascular disease by Hans Selye is an indispensable reference work and review of the world's literature. As pointed out in the prefatory remarks on the style of the book, it is really a book within a book. From the 9,000 original articles that Selye reviewed, 5,000 of the more relevant abstracts were selected for inclusion in the text and appear in double column, small print. The author's narrative is printed in single column, large type, presenting his interpretation of the literature, his hitherto unpublished observations with numerous illustrations, diagrams, tables, charts, electronphotomicrographs, conventional light photomicrographs, and photographs of gross pathology, a good many reproduced in color.

The chapter headings are "History," "Factors Inducing Cardiovascular Disease," "Factors Influencing Cardiovascular Disease," "Histology and Histochemistry," "Chemical and Functional Changes Accompanying Cardiovascular Diseases," and "Theories."
