Abstract

This monograph by the late Wilhelm Raab is part of the American Lecture Series of publications. The subject matter is certainly timely: an extensive review of myocardial necroses that can occur due to other than obstructive coronary artery disease. The author has written on this subject on many previous occasions and he is well-known in this area of interest. At least 37 references in the extensive bibliography are by Raab.

The presentation is interesting and informative but makes difficult reading. Raab's neologisms do not, in my opinion, enhance the presentation or provide clarity (for example "dysionism," "hypoxiating," "catecholamine desensitizing thyrostatic therapy," and "non-coronarogenic" are terms to make the reader pause and ponder). Nonetheless Raab's review of the contribution of electrolyte derangements and adrenal hormone and adrenergic nervous system excesses to the genesis of myocardial damage is important. The concluding review, including specific possibilities for preventive action, is a succinct presentation
