This paperback book covers main sessions presented at a conference of the Royal College of Physicians of London on "Advanced Medicine" and purports to cover "recent advances in various fields." There are eight major sections, including gastroenterology, endocrinology, lung disease and thromboembolism, treatment of malignant disease, calcium metabolism and bone disease, biochemical screening, neurology, and drug addiction. Each of the sections has much to recommend it. In some instances, however, the material presented is more a review of standard material rather than a summary of recent advances. This is especially true in the sections on gastroenterology, and lung disease and thromboembolism, although both are well written. The cautious optimism expressed for ancrod (Arvin [Britain; no comparable US product]) in the treatment of thrombosis and thromboembolism will be of interest to American readers who have less experience with this agent than our British Colleagues.
