Abstract

Under the intriguing title, Hi, Sugar, Vivian Lessel offers her 36 years of experience as a diabetic patient to other diabetics, to those who may become diabetic, and to their families, friends, and associates. The book does not pretend to be a diabetic manual or a structured work of health education. Nevertheless, it is surprisingly complete in its coverage of practical problems in the life of a diabetic. It is factual and accurate at the level of patient instruction.

Lessel's style is totally informal, often desultory, and always warmly intimate. Her writing is enlivened by numerous autobiographic references. The physician reader, for whom the book is not intended, will almost feel that he is intruding upon the private communication of one patient with another.
