This small book is a compilation of presentations and discussions at the 12th annual meeting of the Allen O. Whipple Surgical Society held in Albany, NY, April 18 and 19, 1969. Nine contributors presented ten papers; they represented schools of medicine, industry, and government. They discussed the responsibilities of postgraduate programs, professional societies, and American boards, hospitals, and the government in the continuing education of the surgeon.

Questions were raised as to implementation of such programs, how to monitor them, and how they would affect the individual surgeon and the profession. Although the surgeon was the focal point of discussion, the recommendations could be applied to any medical specialty. Many of the ideas are thought-provoking but remain unsolved. The book is easily read in a short period, and it is recommended reading for those involved and interested in the subject of advanced and continuing education in the medical sciences.
