This book is a collection of papers presented at a symposium on physical fitness and coronary heart disease in Copenhagen in September 1970. The panel consisted of most of the European and American experts in the field of exercise testing. The discussions relate to exercise training in healthy, young, and middle-aged people, as well as patients with coronary heart disease. The physiologic, biochemical, and ultramicroscopic effects of training on the central and peripheral circulation and on trained muscle are discussed. Other presentations relate to the potential preventive aspects of exercise and the relation of exercise to the known epidemiology of coronary artery disease. One section skips to the area of exercise training in peripheral vascular disease.

The book has the expected disadvantages of any conference proceedings, with frequent repetition and some disagreement. Because much of the material is related to methodology, reading is slow. The material is so complete,
