This is the 11th edition of a series which was initiated over one half century ago. Appropriately, the publication of this book falls on the 50th anniversary year of the discovery of insulin. The 32 chapters and more than 800 pages comprising this volume are the work of 26 contributors and four editors, all of whom are currently or have, in the past, been associated with Joslin Clinic group.

The editors state in the preface that their purpose is "that of not only a comprehensive and practical guide for diagnosis and treatment but also a source book to which students of diabetes, whether clinician or investigator, may turn for original data and an in depth discussion." This goal is admirably accomplished. The book is very well organized and is well balanced as to clinical application and basic scientific information.
