Since the decisions of government figure so greatly in determining the character of many aspects of medical practice, medical education, and medical research, the need for all of these segments of the profession to have an effective voice in the councils of government is paramount. Furthermore, these voices would be all the more persuasive if there was a consistent and publicspirited note to the theme being recited.
The primary center for government action is in Washington, DC, since it is there that the federal legislation that has had such widespread national impact is designed and modified. The spokesmen for medicine, therefore, go to Washington to speak their pieces.
