Abstract

This paperback monograph on the "Surgical Treatment of Hyperparathyroidism" represents an analysis of a series of 267 patients who underwent operation for hyperparathyroidism. Of these patients, all but 12 had their diagnosis confirmed surgically and histologically. These patients were treated between 1950 and 1970 in the Leiden University Hospital, the Leiden Deaconess Hospital, or the Rotterdam University Hospital.

The author begins his monograph with a historical review of the disease. Both gross and histological anatomy are presented as well as pathophysiology. After a short section on diagnosis, the surgical technique is described with additional emphasis on considerations for parathyroid hyperplasia. The latter portion of the book is dedicated to the analysis of the findings in the patients studied. The 12 chapters contain 21 figures and tables, and a tremendous list of references from the literature fills 15 of the 94 pages. While this easily-read, well-arranged monograph is basically a
